Healthy Cooking Oils and How to Use Them - 10/17/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich-- There's a lot of misinformation floating around about what cooking oils are actually healthy for you and their proper usage. Generally, extra virgin olive oil is everyone's go-to for cooking, but we have unfortunate news: it shouldn't be. Different oils have different attributes and flavor profiles, lending them to various uses. We at Graff Mt Pleasant are here to set the oil record straight, so let's get our sizzle on!

    1. Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

A staple in nearly every kitchen, olive oil tastes delicious, but it's definitely not a healthy cooking option. Just one tablespoon contains 120 calories and is 14% saturated fat, and while your body does require healthy fatty acids for development, you should be receiving them from natural sources like avocados, nuts, and seeds, not refined oils. In addition, olive oil has an extremely low smoke point, so it's unsuited to cooking at high temperatures. If you're still inclined to keep Extra-Virgin olive oil as a part of your diet, consume it unheated. Drizzle it over salads, or as a dip for bread and veggies.

    2. Avocado Oil

Highly underrated, Avocado oil deserves a lot more praise than it usually gets. It's full of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, and therefore is good for your cholesterol. It also contains lutein, which is an antioxidant that improves your eye health. It has the highest known smoke point of any plant-based oil - 520 degrees - which makes it perfect for deep-frying, grilling, and roasting. You can also use it in your salad dressings to improve the absorption of antioxidants present in vegetables.

    3. Grape Seed Oil

Made from the pressed seeds of grapes, grape seed oil features a bright, soft flavor, and a high content of Vitamin E and oleic acid which has been proven to prevent strokes and curb appetite. Use it to cook vegetables, or add it to your beauty and skin-care regimen - it's really good for for your face and hair! It doesn't separate when chilled so its perfect for use in creamy salad dressings and homemade mayonnaise. In addition, it's a great substitute for butter or shortening in baking recipes.

    4. Almond Oil

Almond oil features a deep, nutty flavor perfect for adding rich, deep flavor to pasta dishes and other hearty meals or baked goods. It's incredibly good for your skin, and is probably a main ingredient in some of your all-natural beauty care products. Use it as a gently makeup remover or a deep, conditioning hair mask. An excellent source of Vitamin E, it's also high in healthy fats that lower blood pressure and support weight loss. It has a medium smoke point, so it's a good option for lightly sauteing vegetables, but shouldn't necessarily be used for deep-frying or grilling.

    5. Coconut Oil

Oh coconut oil, few foods have been the cause of such heated (pun intended) debates, Harvard professors have called it "pure poison" and your standard hippie types champion it as a miracle salve, with unending uses, from cooking and sunscreen, to a natural deodorant and stain remover. While there are few studies to provide us with legitimate data, what we do know about coconut oil is that when it's processed, it's high in bad saturated fats. Go with the virgin option as the good essential fatty acids and antioxidants haven't been killed off. There is also reason to believe that it supports thyroid health while in it's virgin state. We recommend using coconut oil in moderation, however it does lend a lovely tropical flavor to curries and other exotic dishes. Try using it as a hair conditioner, in place of massage oil, or as a cuticle moisturizer, your hippie friends were right, it does have some interesting uses.

    6. Vegetable Oil

Oddly enough, vegetable oil is not made from vegetables. Tough seeds and legumes, not intended for human consumption, are chemically treated so they can be broken down into pourable form. The term vegetable oil includes canola, cottonseed, safflower, sunflower, and soybean oil. What about the jugs of "vegetable oil" sold at the grocery store? False advertising, most oils sold under the label "vegetable" are at least 85% pure soybean oil. These oils are unstable due to the chemical processing they undergo, making them inflammatory to your system, and have been shown to contribute to weight gain, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and even cancer. Even if the packaging on vegetable oil is pretty, and it promises health benefits, it's best to just stay away. Find a fruit or nut oil alternative as these are high in healthy fats. They may be more expensive, but it's worth it in the long run.

    7. Walnut Oil

Dark, with a light, nutty scent, walnut oil can be expensive, but a little goes a long way. It's perfect for use in pasta dishes, sauteing winter vegetables, and for grilling fruits, poultry, and fish. Rich in copper and melatonin, it helps to regulate your body's circadian rhythm. Packed with omega-3, it improves blood circulation, lowers the risk of heart disease, maintains hormone levels, and improves the skin. Once walnut oil is opened, make sure you refrigerate, otherwise it will become rancid.

We hope you found this blog interesting and informative, what do oils do you use for cooking? Are there any interesting uses you've found for oils that we didn't mention? Comment and let us know!

Chevy Fans "In Shock" Over New Camaro Color - 10/17/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich -- Brightly colored muscle cars have been a revered trend since the 1960's, but until now the Chevy Camaro has sported a fairly tame palette offering. The 2019 models have received a total makeover, with vibrant, new colors and modernized nose detail. Shock, the latest color offering, is headed for unveiling at SEMA on the 30th of this month. This extreme highlighter yellow shade is garnering quite the buzz among Chevy enthusiasts producing a mixture of both positive and negative feedback.

Although Chevy has not released any information about exactly which Camaro models are being offered in Shock, we do know that production with the new neon offering will begin early next year and will likely be an extra-cost option. The restyled front features a relocated bow-tie emblem and extra graphics on the hood and fenders. Shiny after-market accessories like black badges and a rear spoiler round out the new appearance. But the aesthetics aren't the only upgrades on the 2019 models, they feature new wheel design, Chevrolet infotainment systems, full-display rearview camera mirror, and forward collision alert.

Love the new color, but aren't a muscle car fan? Fun fact: this color is also currently available on the Chevrolet Bolt EV.

What are your thoughts on the 2019 Chevy Camaro models? How about the color shock? Do you love it, or is it a bit too much? Comment and let us know, we love hearing from you.

Groupe PSA and GMC Teaming up to Launch Car-Sharing Service in the US - 10/11/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich-- Free2Move, a car and bike sharing app owned by Groupe PSA is set to launch in Washington DC this month. The app, which has already launched in Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon allows users to compare car sharing services and choose which works best for them in that moment. It's a multi-provider registration process, so personal info only needs to be uploaded to Free2Move, and then you can order from any other transportation app without having to go through a second vetting process. You can hail public transit, a car, bike or scooter share, and much more!

The Free2Move platform is in use across Europe, but PSA is targeting the US to boost the app's success. There are also whispers of a larger agenda behind the launch. While PSA is the second largest automaker in Europe, their vehicles have not been sold in the US for at least 20 years and various industry leaders suspect this is an attempt to wiggle back into the American market.

In preparation for their Washington DC launch, PSA teamed up with GMC to acquire a fleet of 600 leased Chevrolet Equinox crossovers and Chevrolet Cruze models. Though this is not the first transaction between PSA and GM this year, in early August, the two corporations closed on a deal that relinquished the former GM company Opel/Vauxhall into PSA's hands. GM stated that the sale was a step in a major overhaul for their brand, in addition to a money saving effort, as GMC sales in Europe have been on a steady decline. This partnership has come as surprise to many, including Opel's leadership, but so far the results have seemed to benefit both parties.

What do you think of the new Free2Move platform? Is it an app you would download? Comment and let us know!

An Indie Top Five That You'll Totally Fall For - 10/09/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich -- Fall is such a magical season, a cool interlude, between the sweltering summer and harsh Michigan winter. Innately nostalgic, it haunts us with wonder, engenders the desire for simple comforts, and inspires deep reflection. Nietzsche called it "The season of the soul". At Graff Mt. Pleasant we believe every season and occasion deserves a bomb playlist, so we've gathered a few haunting indie ballads that embody the melancholy energy of the fall. Whether you're chilling by a bonfire or taking a scenic drive, these tracks are sure to set the perfect Autumn mood.

    1. SEASONS - FUTURE ISLANDS

Known for their "knotty, poetic lines" Future Islands is one of the lucky few to catapult to the top tier of Indie music. This song is revered as one of their most successful by fans and critics alike for its deep, heart-wrenching vocals, plinky synth lines, and universal lyrics. It's a track about a man with his heart on the line, and cutting your losses and moving on. What could be more fall? The release of one season, the waiting for another to begin.

    2. CINDER AND SMOKE - IRON AND WINE

Iron and Wine is another of the Indie scene's great success stories, with their songs appearing in countless films, TV shows and commercials. Classic and warm, their tracks are full of restrained imagery and offer a bitter, yet longing, perspective on memory, love, and nostalgia. "Cinder and Smoke" describes a conflict between a desire for the way life used to be, and the strange freedom that accompanies loss. With a soft, haunting melody and beautiful lyricism this is a folky track that's the perfect accompaniment to a scenic, Autumn stroll.

    3. ANOTHER STORY - HEAD AND THE HEART

Unlike their Indie contemporaries, Head and the Heart have released a solid folk and Americana  portfolio over the years while receiving much less than their deserved praise in return. "Another Story" was a cathartic project for Head and the Heart as they struggled to come to terms with the events of the Newtown shootings. Melodically stunning, this bitter and brutally honest musing over the unchanging nature of the world is surprisingly up-lifting.

    4. EVERYTHING LOOKS BETTER IN HINDSIGHT - THE WILD REEDS

This virtually unknown trio pumps out some of the most decadent, perfectly-synced harmonies we've ever heard. It's dessert for your ears...seriously. With rare songwriting, comprised of gut-wrenching lyrics, and soft, tinkling melody, their albums are a painfully gorgeous example of the raw talent that exists outside the mainstream music scene. "Everything Looks Better in Hindsight"  is more than just an artsy breakup song, it's a study in the effects of loss, and a careful inquiry into the fragility of memory. This haunting tune is sure to become one of your favorites, it's the perfect accompaniment to a crisp Autumn morning, or a solid choice for your bonfire playlist.

    5. LAUNDRY ROOM - THE AVETT BROTHERS

One of the most well-known and widely appreciated bands in the folk scene, The Avett Brothers have played just about every major music festival, and have a portfolio that includes 12 albums in addition to hundreds of covers. "Laundry Room" contains all the components for an essential Avett Brothers track: stellar lyricism, gorgeous harmonies and a totally kicking, bluegrass breakdown. A time machine back to the enthralling moments of our first love, the verses take us through snapshots of some of the most universally relateable memories: rebelling against our parents to be with someone we loved, and obsessing over the object of our affections. A song with a deep, meditative intro and a jam-worthy conclusion, this is the perfect barn party track.

5 Awesome Halloween Traditions From Around The World - 10/03/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich -- It's Halloween season! There's a special, static energy in the air this time of year that gets us all in the fall spirit. Pumpkin flavored lattes, plaid scarves, spooky movies, trick or treating, we all have our favorite way to celebrate the season. While most cultures don't celebrate Halloween in the fashion we do in America, there are so some pretty awesome fall traditions that take place around the world and we here at Graff Mt. Pleasant have compiled a list of our favorites. Happy Halloween!

    1. DIA DE LOS MUERTES - MEXICO

A Mexican festival dedicated to honoring the dead and celebrating life, Dia de los Muertos is observed on the 1st and 2nd of November each year. It is believed that the night of October 31st, the gates of heaven open, allowing the souls of the deceased to return to their families for one day. This momentous event is celebrated with a parade, in-home altars decorated with food and trinkets for the visiting ancestors, the planting of marigolds, grave decoration, graveside vigils and of course the consumption of traditional treats! The inspiration for the work of numerous artists and musicians, this holiday of skulls and color is a testament to Mexican culture's grand aesthetics and respect for the deceased.

    2. KAWASAKI HALLOWEEN PARADE - JAPAN

One of Tokyo's largest yearly events, the Kawasaki parade has been observed for the last 21 years and draws nearly 4,000 costume enthusiasts each year. Anyone can register to join in the parade, although fees and guidelines are strictly enforced. The festivities continue for two whole weeks after the event with costume contests, dance parties, a special children's parade, pumpkin carving and more!

    3. PCHUM BEN - CAMBODIA

Pchum Ben is a 15 day long religious festival in Cambodia that takes place in late September and early October. The first 14 days bear resemblance to the observance of Lent, but on the last day of the festival, it is believed that the gates to the underworld open, causing supposed spikes in spirit activity. During this time Cambodians visit at least three pagodas (temples), pay their respects to their deceased relatives, leave offerings, and feast. It's also considered an important spiritual time for monks, and they spend the majority of their time during the festival chanting and fasting.

    4. DAY OF DRACULA - ROMANIA

Tourists from all over the world gather at Bran Castle, otherwise known as Dracula's castle on the night of Halloween for tours and extravagant parties. Although there is no evidence to suggest that this fortress actually belonged to Vlad the Impaler, that doesn't dampen the festivities. Complete with a traditional 3-course Romanian dinner, themed costume dance, horror movie screening, and souvenirs, this event is a Transylvanian Halloween. In keeping with dark Romanian wit, they offer the entire package for free if you are over 200 years old, have no reflection, and decompose when the light strikes you.

    5. OGNISSANTI - ITALY

Celebrated around the world on November 1st, known in Italy as Ognissanti, it is a feast dedicated to Catholic saints and departed ancestors. Festivities include mass held in cemeteries, decorating graves with chrysanthemums, and the burning of red candles. Not unlike other Italian holidays, food plays a major role in the celebration of Ognissanti, traditional stews and sweet breads are consumed, along with the favorite foods of departed family members.

First in Fright: 10 Influential Horror Movies You Need to See this Halloween - 09/28/2018

First in Fright: 10 Influential Horror Movies You Need to See this Halloween

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- If you're too old to trick-or-treat and parties aren't really your thing, the next best thing to do on Halloween night is to grab some snacks and plop down on the couch for an evening of scary movies! While you might already have some favorites on the agenda, we at Graff Mt. Pleasant would like to share with you some legendary titles that paved the way for the subgenres of horror that you enjoy today.

Without further ado, here are ten influential horror movies that are essential viewing for Halloween!

First in Fright: 10 Influential Horror Movies You Need to See this Halloween

    1. NOSFERATU - 1922

Before Bela Lugosi portrayed everyone's favorite bloodsucking aristocrat in 1931, vampires actually made their theatrical debut in F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu released in 1922. This silent thriller was supposed to be a film adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, but the rights to use the exact plot and character names could not be obtained, although that certainly does not take away from its legacy.

When you eventually see actor Max Schreck as Count Orlok, he is a hideously terrifying departure from the suave and seductive denizens of the night that we're used to nowadays. According to the folklore of the day, however, vampires were monstrous creatures rather than supernatural beauties. Years later, Orlok's repulsive appearance would go on to inspire that of Kurt Barstow in Salem's Lot.

A key aspect of Nosferatu's fright factor is its ambiance, most notably the use of dramatic shadows to build suspense, a technique that inspired numerous thrillers after it.

    2. HALLOWEEN - 1978

The "slasher" is perhaps one of the most popular horror movie subgenres, and there are a ton of them out there. Who brought this bloody breed to the mainstream? None other than the one and only John Carpenter and his silent psychopath, Michael Myers. Halloween is widely regarded by horror movie buffs as being responsible for a number of tropes that went on to become synonymous with the subgenre, such as the "final girl" trope which involves the killing off of "morally wayward" characters leaving the "innocent" one the lone survivor, as well as the "absentee parents" trope that explains the lack of responsible adults in the midst of a life-threatening situation.

While Halloween is not the first horror movie to feature a serial killer as its main antagonist, it ushered in a new era of scares particularly amongst its principle viewers: teenagers. Halloween's terror, as well as that of every other slasher flick that followed in its footsteps, lies in its relatability to moviegoing youth who saw themselves in the onscreen characters being hunted by a ruthless killer, and the not-so-unbelievable idea of having it happen while they're just hanging out.

    3. PSYCHO - 1960

If Halloween is responsible for popularizing the slasher subgenre, Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece that forever made showers the stuff of nightmares originated it. Psycho is famous for pioneering two game-changing camera techniques. First is the use of the first-person perspective, allowing the audience to see through the eyes of the characters as an involved party than simply bystanders. Second is "quick-cutting", used during the famous shower scene, which creates the illusion of graphic violence as well as feelings of anxiety and dread in the viewer through rapidly changing shots.

You might think that you saw Janet Leigh getting stabbed to death, but in reality, the knife is never shown actually touching her skin. Although, the fact that this scene remains the freshest in the minds of viewers to this day - despite only lasting 45 seconds and happening towards the beginning - proves that imagination and perception are two very powerful tools of terror.

    4. THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT - 1999

Ever see Paranormal Activity or Cloverfield? Well, these are the shoulders that they stand upon. Blair Witch is an independent film turned mainstream success and incredibly influential to the horror genre as it introduced the concept of "found footage" cinematography, which puts the characters into the visual driver's seat as we the passenger audience look on in terror as their fate unfolds in real time. This style of camerawork adds a whole new level of chilling realism, as it is designed to make us forget that we're watching a movie, and rather a genuine account of three actual people being stalked mercilessly through the wilderness by an evil monster.

First in Fright: 10 Influential Horror Movies You Need to See this Halloween

    5. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET - 1984

Wes Craven's classic slasher carried on many of the tropes popularized by John Carpenter, however, the thing that made it stand out from the many movies of its kind at the time is its ability to cross the line between reality and imagination, as we struggle to determine if the seemingly normal bedroom in which a 21-year-old Johnny Depp is enjoying music is actually that, or the dreamland hunting ground of Freddy Krueger.

The other thing that makes A Nightmare on Elm Street so memorable is Freddy himself, being a departure from the standard silent, knife-wielding slashers whose every detail was specifically engineered to scare. For example, his signature "Christmas" sweater is really not related to the holiday at all, and his unique razor glove is more than just a weapon.

While creating the character of Freddy Krueger, Wes Craven spent a long time researching things that are generally scary and unsettling to people. He found that the colors of red and green - when viewed side by side - are the most difficult for the human eye to process, therefore inspiring a sense of uneasiness. He also found that the number one common fear shared across many of the world's cultures is being torn apart by animal claws, which inspired the razor glove's design.

    6. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD - 1968

Although it was not the first movie to introduce the concept of the walking dead to the horror genre, George Romero's Night of the Living Dead is responsible for how we know zombies today. While the term "zombie" is never applied to the creatures in the film (Romero called them "ghouls"), it nevertheless revolutionized the subgenre and transformed the definition of a zombie in popular culture from a product of voodoo magic to the shuffling, rotting husks hungry for brains we all know and love.

    7. THE EXORCIST - 1973

Considered the scariest movie of its day and the first of the horror genre to be nominated for Best Picture, The Exorcist is so influential for how it redefined the concept of the demonic possession subgenre, and thus the sheer mortal terror that it inspires. Previously, it only happened to people who were "asking for it", so to speak, by recklessly dabbling in the occult or not having faith in God. However, given that the victim in The Exorcist is an innocent little girl, it proposed the idea that it could happen to anyone at any time - an idea that caused numerous moviegoers in 1973 to sleep with crucifixes out of fear that they too would end up an unwilling vessel of the Devil.

    8. THE LOST BOYS - 1987

The Lost Boys follows the story of a young man named Mike, who together with his mother and little brother move to the fictional seaside California city of Santa Carla to start a new life. That all changes, however, when he befriends a group of leather-clad youth who only seem to come out at night, and finds himself in a battle for his humanity.

Before the cult classic directed by Joel Schumacher hit the scene in 1987, vampires were portrayed in horror cinema as cape-wearing eccentrics who lived in castles and slept in coffins. The Lost Boys, however, is considered the birth of the "modern vampire". That is the effortlessly cool nocturnal playboys that remain fan favorites throughout the entertainment world as seen in titles like Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, and Queen of the Damned.

Although, those supernatural good looks and wicked charms aside, The Lost Boys introduced a whole new level of danger when it comes to vampires: they now look exactly like us. Walking undetected amongst the human population. Free to prey on whomever they choose.

    9. THE HAUNTING - 1963

We've talked about vampires, zombies, witches, and all manner of horror movie staples. But what about ghosts? Based on the book The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, British-made The Haunting is widely regarded as the originator of the "haunted house" subgenre, about a paranormal investigator who invites two ordinary women to spend what turns out to be a night of terror in the very spiritually active Hill House.

What makes this film so interesting is that we never actually see the ghosts. The Haunting relies solely on the power of ambiance and the audience's natural fear of the unknown to garner scares, which proved to be a highly effective strategy. Think about it. When we physically encounter something scary, we can see it and avoid it, and even study it for weaknesses. When we can only hear it, however, when we don't know what we're looking for, our imaginations run wild and we psyche ourselves out trying to determine the threat.

First in Fright: 10 Influential Horror Movies You Need to See this Halloween

    10. THE EVIL DEAD - 1981

The final title on our list of influential horror movies is none other than the first honest-to-goodness "survive the night" offering to the genre, directed by and starring Michigan-natives Sam Raimi and Bruce Campell, respectively. You know the type. A group of youth goes away for a weekend to a remote location for a raucous good time, no parents allowed, only to have their party crashed by a nasty something or other whose appearance could have easily been avoided had they not been reckless. In the case of this movie, it was reading an evil book full of evil words that summoned evil...uh...dead.

The trope has been carried on by numerous titles, but it all, for the most part, began with The Evil Dead. Like the slasher flicks that were beginning to become popular around this time thanks to Halloween, this movie relies on its relatability to its primary viewers: youth. Although, instead of showing a killer barging into the homes of their on-screen peers and butchering them to death for seemingly no reason at all, The Evil Dead attacks the general assumption of invincibility amongst kids. In other words, if you do stupid things, there are stupid consequences.

To quote a certain ghost-faced killer not listed here: "What's your favorite scary movie?" What titles are on your essential horror movie night list for Halloween? Let us know!

The Brands of General Motors Team Up to Provide Assistance to Hurricane Florence Survivors - 09/25/2018

The Brands of General Motors Team Up to Provide Assistance to Hurricane Florence Survivors

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Hurricane Florence, which made landfall in the Carolinas on September 14th, is reported to have caused an estimated $38 billion in property damage, making it the 6th costliest hurricane to have affected the United States to date. In the wake of the devastation, thousands of people are left to pick up the pieces and rebuild, but they won't have to go it completely alone.

In order to help customers in the area recover quickly, General Motors has mobilized all brands underneath its banner - including OnStar, GM Financial, Customer Sales, and Aftercare - to launch several special relief efforts.

    These efforts include:

    • Complementary Crisis Assist from OnStar to customers with properly equipped GM vehicles (2006 and newer) in affected areas. They are providing such emergency services as routing assistance, survival resource information, Hands-Free Calling minutes and 4G LTE Wi-Fi data via AT&T. On top of that, enrollment in OnStar is not required.
    • GM Financial is assisting impacted customers with payment arrangements and waiving most related fees. Eligible customers who must replace a vehicle destroyed in the storm may qualify for a 90-day deferred first payment on a new vehicle.
    • GM Genuine Parts and ACDelco is providing expedited delivery of service parts to help speed up vehicle repairs.
    • New and used vehicles are being sent to the region to help meet expected replacement demand, including demand for pre-owned vehicles, courtesy transportation, and insurance rentals.
    • Those replacing a vehicle damaged by the storm in the region are eligible for $1,000 in purchase assistance for almost all 2018 and 2019 models under the GM brand, in addition to other incentives such as GM's military and first responder discounts. Customers who are leasing are eligible for $500 lease allowance, on top of the aforementioned incentives.
    • Residents of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia must present an insurance claim form indicating vehicle damage as a result of Hurricane Florence. The offer is valid until the end of October, excludes select trim levels, and is not available with some other offers.
“The entire GM family of brands and services has come together to aid those experiencing the devastation caused by Hurricane Florence – this is personal for us as many of our families, friends, dealer partners, and employees are among those directly impacted,” says Alan Batey, president of GM North America.

Chevy Introduces the Colorado ZR2 Bison to Its Mid-Sized Lineup - 09/18/2018

Chevy Introduces the Colorado ZR2 Bison to their Mid-Sized Lineup

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Chevrolet adds the Colorado ZR2 Bison to their lineup of midsized pickup trucks, designed with high off-road performance in mind. The Bison is the product of Chevy's first collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), a premium off-road aftermarket manufacturer.

In less than four years, Chevrolet has gained more than a quarter of the market's midsized pick-up truck sales as a result of its commitment to continued innovation. In that time, Colorado has introduced several segment firsts including an all-new V-6 gas engine /eight-speed transmission combo, diesel engine, the ZR2 "segment of one" off-roader, and now the Bison.

In order to protect sensitive undercarriage components when driving over rocky, jagged terrain, the Colorado ZR2 Bison features five skid plates designed by AEV covering the engine oil pan, fuel tank, transfer case, and front/rear locking differentials; which are constructed of hard, durable hot-stamped Boron steel.

Additionally, AEV also designed the stamped steel front and rear bumpers for further protection to the truck, featuring winch provisions and standard fog lights with recovery points integrated into the rear bumper.

“More and more enthusiasts are discovering that Colorado is ideal for off-roading, especially overland travel,” says Sandor Piszar, director of Marketing, Chevrolet Truck.
“The Colorado Z71 offers a full suite of off-road equipment, the maneuverability of a midsize truck and the driving range of a class-exclusive diesel engine. The Colorado ZR2 offers even greater off-road capability with class-exclusive front and rear locking differentials and Multimatic DSSV dampers. And now, Bison offers customers an even more extreme turnkey off-road truck ready to tackle your next adventure.”

A unique departure from the classic Chevy design, the Bison ditches the traditional "bowtie" emblem in favor of an exclusive flow-through "CHEVROLET" lettered grille on its front end. On top of that, a set of 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac off-road tires sit beneath larger fender flares than previously and wrap 17x8-inch aluminum wheels made specifically for the Bison ZR2.

“We’ve been following Colorado since its introduction, and the ZR2 really captured our attention,” says Dave Harriton, founder, and president of AEV. “As this is the first Chevrolet vehicle we’ve given the AEV treatment to, we wanted to do something special with the industry’s first use of hot-stamped Boron steel. We also expect that Colorado drivers will love the added ruggedness of our front and rear bumpers on ZR2 Bison.”

Everything you know and love about the standard Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 also comes equipped on the Bison, including but not limited to:

    • Class-exclusive front and rear locking electronic differentials
    • Revolutionary, segment-exclusive Multimatic DSSV dampers
    • Off-road rocker protection
    • Cast-iron control arms
    • Autotrac transfer case

    Available Bison options include:

    • 2.8L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, capable of 186 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque
    • Choice of crew- or extended cab configurations (including short and long beds, respectively)

Stay tuned to Graff Mt. Pleasant for availability regarding the all-new Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison!

Chevrolet Launches "Vocal" App that Aims to Curb Distracted Driving - 09/13/2018

Chevrolet Launches "Vocal" App that Aims to Curb Distracted Driving

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Part of the initiative to promote safer and less distracted driving, Chevrolet is launching a new app called "Call Me Out" to help remind new and experienced drivers alike to put their phones down and keep their eyes on the road.

According to a recent surveyed performed by Research Now, 84% of people admit that driving while handling a phone is dangerous, and yet 90% of drivers say that they do it. Driven to encourage a change and the behavior and conversation, Chevy hosted a hackathon during which they challenged teams of young people to propose ways to combat distracted driving, and from that, the framework of Call Me Out was conceived.

The new app combines two powerful and influential forces: technology and our loved ones. Friends and family members of users have the ability to record a message through the app that will activate when the user tries to use their phone while driving, effectively "calling them out" and making them think twice about the potentially deadly consequences of taking their eyes off the road.

“As the father of two daughters, I am keenly aware of all the perils that my children face out in the world on a daily basis, and that is why it is so important for GM and Chevrolet to offer technologies that help all of us become safer drivers,” says Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Global Chevrolet. “With Call Me Out we are extending our commitment beyond the technologies integrated into GM and Chevy vehicles and are making the app available for Android phone users who drive other vehicle makes and models in an effort to help people change their driving behavior and make our roads safer.”

    HOW IT WORKS

    • Call Me Out uses the voices of the driver's loved ones to help them fight the urge to engage in risky distracted driving as if they were physically in the vehicle.
    • Currently, the app is only available to Android phone users who can download it for free in the Google Play store.
    • The app utilizes the vehicle's accelerometer and GPS to detect when the driver physically picks up their phone while traveling at speeds of more than 5 MPH, at which point it plays recorded, personalized messages from friends and family that remind them to put their phone down and concentrate on the road.
    • The app also adds a little competition to help encourage drivers to stay safe on the road, featuring a scoreboard and rankings, and keeping score of how much the user handles their phone. The less they do, the higher their score and rank on the leaderboard.

“Today’s vehicles offer a range of active safety features like Lane Keep Assist and Forward Automatic Braking that help drivers stay more aware of their surroundings,” says Tricia Morrow, Chevy safety engineer.
“But we also know the vehicle is only one element. Chevy’s Call Me Out app gives drivers another great tool to reinforce good driving behaviors — and as a mom of a teenage daughter, I personally know how important it is to model good driving behaviors and encourage others to do the same.”
Drivers must be 18 years or older and have a compatible device and data plan to use Call Me Out.

GM Helps to Foster the Future of Women in Engineering - 09/08/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- General Motors engineer Keysha Camps is helping to build the future of women in engineering by teaching a group of twenty high school girls in Detroit the skills they need to succeed. The Mercy Midnight Storm (after the Mercy Education Project from which they hail) is the all-girl robotics team headed up by Camps, who she says are the future of autonomous vehicle technology.

The Mercy Midnight Storm is first all-girl robotics team out of Detroit to be part of FIRST Robotics (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and competes against other Michigan high schools in various competitions. An initiative for youth around the world, FIRST strives to drive interest and education in the fields of science and technology through accessible and innovative programs.

The mentorship of Camps to the girls on the team is extremely important, as women make up only 14% of American engineers and one-in-four bachelor's degrees in engineering are awarded to women. Camps aims to shatter this glass ceiling by being a positive female role model to girls with an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers and encouraging them to break down gender barriers in these predominately male fields.

Camps says that she initially decided to join the FIRST organization because she was inspired by the numerous non-profits operating in the city aimed at improving the lives of youth. Her efforts with the Mercy Midnight Storm reflects the example set by GM CEO Mary Barra, who herself holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering along with an MBA.

    • Customizable profiles that save each driver's personalized settings and presets, which are then stored in the cloud and can be accessed and used in other compatible 2019 GMCs.

    RIDE AND HANDLING

The exclusive Adaptive Ride Control on the 2019 Sierra Denali offers premium ride comfort with overall improved road isolation and control than ever before. Utilizing real-time road monitoring and driver inputs when accelerating, cornering, braking, and trailering, the system's active dampers can be individually adjusted every 2 milliseconds.

On top of that, the all-new Traction Select System allows the driver to choose from preset drive modes, each tailored for different terrain and weather conditions like mud and snow, which then adjusts the 2019 Sierra's transmission shift points, throttle mapping, and StabiliTrak for optimal performance. The Traction Select System also operates with Adaptive Ride Control to further enhance the driving experience.

The available Traction Select System modes include:

    • Tour: The default mode of operation at every time the driver fires up the truck. Designed to deliver the right blend of refinement and efficiency for everyday use.
    • Sport: The transmission downshifts in order to keep the engine in its peak powerband, while power steering assist is slightly reduced to make the steering feel more direct, communicative and sporty.
    • Snow: Available only on two-wheel-drive Sierras, this mode optimizes the vehicle's driveline for wintry weather. On top of leveraging the vehicle's standard Traction Control and StabiliTrak stability control systems, this mode also provides a slower, less sensitive accelerator pedal calibration.
    • Off-Road: Designed for use for higher-speed driving on non-paved surfaces, this mode utilizes the same accelerator calibration as Snow Mode which gives the driver precise throttle control. Off-Road also incorporates StabiliTrak and traction control calibrations that allow for a little more wheel slip than on dry surfaces to aid in carrying momentum which is crucial in mud or gravel.
    • Tow/Haul: Modifies the transmission calibration so that shift points are higher, allowing the engine to deliver peak power. It also initiates downshifts earlier in order to leverage engine braking and reduce wear on brake components. Tow/Haul also engages Grade Braking functionality so that on long, downhill stretches, a light touch of the brake pedal can initiate a downshift to slow the vehicle more efficiently.

Additionally, the standard Autotrac 2-Speed Transfer Case provides a mechanical low range for amplified torque at low speeds, while a new electro-hydraulic power brake boost system (rather than a vacuum-assist system) offers a strong, smooth, and consistent brake pedal feel with a loaded bed or while trailering.

    THE MOST POWERFUL V-8 ENGINE

The available 6.2L V-8 engine on the 2019 Denali is the largest in the segment as well as the most powerful, rated at an SAE-certified 420 horsepower with 460 lb-ft of torque, and paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM), an industry-first cylinder deactivation technology, enables the engine to operate in 17 different shift patterns between two to eight cylinders which, depending on demand, is designed to optimize fuel efficiency and power delivery.

5 Reasons You Should Have Your Vehicle Serviced at a Dealership - 08/22/2018

Owning a car is a big responsibility. Like any machine, they need to be properly cared for in order to continue running at their best. Unless you’re a hardcore gearhead, however, you probably aren’t going to be performing routine maintenance yourself, and even if you are it helps to have a trusted resource to consult should you need to do so. The question is: who do you choose?

A dealership service center and your local mechanic have their own pros and cons. However, for the sake of this article, we’re going to be focusing on the important reasons why a dealership like Graff Mt. Pleasant is the best place to have your car serviced.

     1. TRAINING

One of the biggest reasons the dealership wins over the local mechanic is the training provided. Automotive manufacturers offer specialist training through their network of dealerships, meaning that the technicians employed by a service center have expert knowledge of the performance of that particular line of vehicles, and thus know how and when they should be repaired. This training is often ongoing, meaning that dealership technicians are constantly kept up to date on the latest engineering and technologies released by the manufacturer.

    2. FREQUENCY

Dealership technicians almost exclusively work on the make of vehicle sold by the dealership, granting them a higher degree of experience than an independent mechanic who may work on a particular brand here and there.

    3. EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES

When it comes to the quality of tools used, dealership service centers certainly have a leg up over local mechanics. In addition to manufacturer-provided assistance with start-up costs and equipment, dealerships receive priority over anyone else when new service tools and specifications are developed, making them better equipped to handle service issues as engineering and technology are updated with each new model.

Dealer facilities also tend to be cleaner and better organized than a mechanic shop, which not only bodes well for the condition of your vehicle once you get it back, but also for you as most dealerships feature things like waiting rooms, complimentary drinks and snacks, television, and even Wi-Fi to make the wait more bearable.

    4. WARRANTIES

Another benefit to having your car serviced at a dealership are warranties. Both local mechanic shops and dealerships offer warranties for the work they perform, but the advantage definitely rests with the dealership. Within your vehicle’s warranty period, any repairs or routine maintenance are covered free of charge. Although, should you have to have service performed outside of a warranty, a dealership can back up their work with a warranty that is honored nationwide. That way, if a repair doesn’t hold, you can have it fixed at any other dealer at no cost to you.

Local mechanics, on the other hand, may only offer very limited warranties or only cover labor or parts, but never both. If you travel a lot or move, their warranty may also be worthless elsewhere, leaving you to foot a potentially hefty bill when you could have just visited one of the many dealerships in the network and had it done for free.

    5. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

As representatives of the brand and the fact they have to pay the manufacturer to operate under their banner, dealerships have a significant advantage over local mechanics in the customer satisfaction department. Independent shops are free to run their business however they want and thus, depending on the character of ownership, are not held to the same strict corporate standards as are dealerships. If you have a bad experience at a local shop, your complaints run the risk of being overlooked as they answer to no superior entity. Dealership service centers, however, are policed by customer surveys and the open line of communication we have with the manufacturer itself (i.e. the one who keeps them employed).

While it tends to be a matter of preference and convenience, this article highlights some advantages to having your car serviced at a dealership rather than a local mechanic. It may not be for everyone, but dealership service centers have some important perks that make them a valid resource for drivers. Schedule a service appointment with Graff Mt. Pleasant today!

By Popular Demand, Chevy Introduces the 2019 Tahoe and Suburban Premier Plus Special Editions - 08/21/2018

Tahoe and Suburban Premier Plus Special Editions Introduced by Chevrolet

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Chevrolet is expanding the availability of the 6.2L V-8 engine in its 2019 line-up of full-size SUVs with the introduction of the Tahoe and Suburban Premier Plus special editions.

The 6.2L V-8 was originally available on the 2018 Tahoe RST 6.2L Performance Package. It also recently debuted on the 2019 Suburban RST 6.2L Performance Package and is now available at Chevrolet dealerships nationwide.

“Our customers have shown strong demand for both Tahoe and Suburban with the 6.2L V-8 option,” said Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet Trucks Marketing and Advertising. “Thirty-six percent of all Chevy full-size SUV special edition models are now sold with this engine. Premier Plus gives both Suburban and Tahoe customers another option to choose from with several added premium touches.”

All Premier Plus vehicles, including the Premier RST with the optional 6.2L Performance Package, feature Magnetic Ride Control with performance calibration along with a Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission. An active suspension system that "reads" the road every millisecond,  Magnetic Ride Control triggers dampening changes in the electronically controlled shock absorbers in 10-15 milliseconds. This results in improved body-motion control while cornering and an overall more comfortable cruising experience.

As for the 10-speed automatic transmission, drivers will enjoy smaller steps between each ratio to maximize engine power under acceleration. This is accomplished by using a wide 7.39 overall gear ratio spread and lower top gear ratio, which allows for the reduction of engine revolutions at highway speeds.

Other features include a unique interior with heated and ventilated black/mahogany, leather-appointed seats against a surrounding jet black trim. Along with 22-inch polished wheels, this premium two-tone interior makes its line-up debut on the 2019 Premier Plus special editions.

Other appearance features include gold "bowtie" emblems, chrome nameplate badging, a head-up display and 8-inch diagonal cluster, cross rails, chrome power steps and exhaust tip, and Chevrolet-branded cargo organizer.

In terms of connectivity, the 2019 Premier Plus special editions include a 12-month data plan of a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot.

The 6.2L V-8 engine now available on the 2019 Premier Plus special edition Tahoe and Suburban is capable of 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft. of torque. It also delivers three state-of-the-art technologies including direct injection, Active Fuel Management, and continuously variable valve timing in order for drivers to get the most out of power, torque, and efficiency across a broad range of operating conditions.

Stay tuned for updates regarding the availability of the 2019 Premier Plus special edition Tahoe and Suburban at Graff Mt. Pleasant!

2019 Chevrolet Silverado Aims to Improve Trailering Experiences - 08/15/2018

2019 Chevrolet Silverado Aims to Improve Trailering Experiences

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- The all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado introduces several levels of towing features to improve drivers' trailering experiences - all light-duty models feature myChevrolet trailering phone app capability with the available Advanced Trailering System, which includes in-vehicle access to the system.

Working in tandem with both of these technologies, the Trailering Camera Package provides a more comprehensive view of whatever you're towing. On top of that, Chevy has taken the guesswork out of calculating combined truck and trailer weight with an industry-first trailering label.

“Ultimately, these technologies serve to eliminate common pain points of towing and help provide customers with a less stressful experience while trailering,” said Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer, Full-Size Trucks, General Motors.

    MYCHEVROLET APP TRAILERING FEATURES

All 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models will come with select trailering features included in the myChevrolet app such as pre-departure towing checklists and a glossary of towing terms. Additionally, the myChevrolet app allows you to conduct trailer light tests and automatic exterior light sequences to aid in confirming proper trailer connection. This feature can also be activated via the Advanced Trailering System.

    ADVANCED TRAILERING SYSTEM

If you tow often, the Advanced Trailering System on the 2019 Silverado makes it a more seamless process. It comes standard on the LTZ and High Country trim levels, and is available on the LT, RST, and Trail Boss trim levels.

    • Auto Parking Brake Assist: If you've ever dealt with the frustration of perfectly aligning your truck and trailer hitch only to see your truck roll when you put it in park, then you will love this industry-first technology. Auto Parking Brake Assist sets automatically when Hitch View is activated to help avoid rolling when you've lined up your truck with the trailer then shift into park.
    • Hitch Guidance with Hitch View: Adding a dynamic backing guideline to the Rear Vision Camera, this feature aids in lining up the hitch to add precision and a visual cue to reduce alignment difficulty.
    • Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring System: This is an optional feature that can monitor the tire pressure of trailer tires using the infotainment system in your truck. On top of that, this also lets you monitor trailer tire temperature in order to prevent blowouts due to overheating. Requires optional equipment and dealer installation.

    ADVANCED TRAILERING SYSTEM INFOTAINMENT APP

The available Advanced Trailering System features an infotainment app accessible from the dashboard, which allows you to track fuel mileage and transmission temperature of the truck while towing. Additionally, you can create up to five profiles, including guests, for different trailer types.

Brake gain memory works with the integrated Trailer Brake Controller, providing fingertip control of the trailer brakes and letting you set and save the controller's brake gain setting for each profile.

Another industry-first featured on the 2019 Chevy Silverado is Trailer Theft Alert, which can activate the truck's lights and horn if the trailer's harness is disconnected. If you're enrolled in the OnStar Safety & Security plan, you will also receive a theft alert through your preferred method of contact.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado Aims to Improve Trailering Experiences

    TRAILER CAMERA PACKAGE

All-new for 2019, this package enhances trailering views with three cameras that provide a 270-degree view including both sides and the rear. An optional fourth camera can also be mounted to the trailer itself for an even more improved view.

    TRAILERING LABEL

Not all trucks are created equal in terms of towing and hauling capacities, even if they're from the same manufacturer, and tends to vary widely from truck to truck making it difficult to calculate. To alleviate the frustration associated with guessing, Chevrolet has included a trailering label in the driver's side door jamb of every 2019 Silverado, which includes the information necessary to calculate your truck's exact capacities.

    Information displayed on the label:
    • Gross vehicle weight rating
    • Gross combined weight rating
    • Gross axle weight rating (rear)
    • Maximum payload
    • Maximum tongue weight
    • Curb weight

National Radio Day: Awesome Top 100 Songs from Each Decade - 08/14/2018

National Radio Day: Awesome Top 100 Songs from Each Decade

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- The invention of the radio dates back to the late 1800s, and many inventors played a part in developing it into the entertainment and information medium we know today. If you can believe it, there was actually a time when people listened to rather than watched everything from news to shows (imagine the concept of "binge-listening" rather than "binge-watching")!

Even though television dominates most of our media nowadays, there's still one thing that many of us still turn to radio for, and that's music! In honor of National Radio Day on August 20th, here are Graff Mt. Pleasant's picks of some awesome songs from Billboard's Top 100 for each decade of music radio!

1940s: "PEOPLE WILL SAY WE'RE IN LOVE" - Frank Sinatra, 1943

Recorded during the early musician's strike of the 1940s which meant that a chorus had to be used in place of a band, "Ol' Blue Eyes" proves on his interpretation of this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic that he didn't need instruments to croon his heart out.

    1950s: "I WALK THE LINE" - Johnny Cash, 1956

The first chart-topping hit by the one and only "Man in Black", the unique chord progression in this song was inspired by backward playback of guitar runs Cash had recorded while stationed in Germany as a member of the Air Force. Why does he hum so much during? To find his pitch in amidst all those key changes!

1960s: "SHE LOVES YOU" - The Beatles, 1964

The "Fab Four" exploded onto the American music scene in the early 60s, causing countless teenage girls to lose their minds and forever leaving their mark on music history as one of the most influential acts of all time. This love song of theirs, unusually written from the perspective of a third rather than first party, is impossible to not belt at full volume.

    1970s: "BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY" - Queen, 1976

Freddie Mercury's magnum opus is one of music's most iconic, fusing elements of rock and opera into nearly six minutes of mastery. Mercury's vocal range was so enormous and powerful that medical science has trouble explaining how it even existed in the first place, and "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a perfect example of his legendary capability notably the opening five-part harmony which is comprised entirely of his voice.

    1980s: "MATERIAL GIRL" - Madonna, 1984

Michigan's own Madonna established herself as a hitmaker and pop icon with this punchy tune. While the song is often taken literally as valuing wealth over love, many critics have made a case for "Material Girl" being an early voice of feminism in music, coming from the perspective of a powerful and capable woman whose success allows her to have her pick of many suitors - although she subversively warns that money cannot buy happiness.

1990s: "I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU" - Whitney Houston, 1993

This song might have been written by Dolly Parton, but it arguably was made by Whitney Houston. Covered for the soundtrack to The Bodyguard in which Houston starred alongside Kevin Costner, this impassioned ballad spent 14 weeks at number one, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time, and the best-selling single released by a woman in music history.

2000s: "ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL?" - Jet, 2004

It's impossible not to dance to this solid, honest-to-goodness bit of rock n' roll from Australian quartet, Jet. While many comparisons have between the song and Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" and The White Stripes' "Screwdriver", drummer Nic Cester has cited Motown greats Martha and the Vandellas and the Supremes as its principle inspirations.

2010s: "ROLLING IN THE DEEP" - Adele, 2010

Her first number one single in the United States, Adele channels Wanda Jackson with a dash of Tina Turner in this song from the perspective of a scorned lover who makes the hard realization that, despite lingering sentiments, reconciliation is not possible. With over 7.6 million copies sold, "Rolling in the Deep" holds the record for the best-selling digital single by a female artist in the US. Note: She says "ship".

We hope you've enjoyed this trip through musical time with us, and encourage you to remember that the musicians listed here as well as your personal favorites owe much of their careers to the radio! This National Radio Day, support your local radio station and thus your favorite artists by tuning in and enjoying the music!

2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 Durabed is the Largest in its Class - 08/08/2018

2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 Durabed is the Largest in its Class

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Boasting best-in-class cargo volume, box depth and box length at floor in addition to a segment-leading 12 fixed tie-downs and an exclusive power tailgate, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has the most functional and largest pick-up truck bed on the market.

“The bed is the heart and soul of any pickup, so we made several improvements to the bed of the all-new Silverado to give our customers an even better hauling experience,” said Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer, Full-Size Trucks, General Motors. “We’ve added so many features and benefits that it deserves its own name – Durabed.”

Every bed size in the 2019 Silverado line-up has increased significantly compared to the 2018 model year:

    • 2018:
      • Short box: 53 cubic feet
      • Standard box: 62 cubic feet
      • Long box: 75 cubic feet
    • 2019:
      • Short box: 63 cubic feet
      • Standard box: 72 cubic feet
      • Long box: 89 cubic feet
In order to achieve a short box option that is 20% more than the competition, Chevy widened the maximum width of the bed floor nearly 10% (7 inches), and implemented this across all bed sizes for the 2019 Silverado.

Additionally, a higher grade steel is being used in the construction of the Durabed for 2019:

    • BED MATERIAL:
      • 2019 Silverado: High-strength steel (500 MPa)
      • 2019 Ford F-Series: Aluminum
      • 2019 Ram 1500: High-strength steel (340 MPa)
In terms of cargo box space, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado now leads the competition by at least 10 cubic feet. As for cargo box depth and length at floor, the 2019 Silverado now leads between 1-10 inches.

The 2019 Chevy Silverado now features 12 fixed tie-downs, with the strength of each being doubled from 250 lbs. to 500 lbs. of force before bending. An additional 9 moveable tie-downs are also available for more cargo flexibility. With 21 tie-down points in all, the 2019 Silverado sports the most of any pick-up truck available.

Dorm Move-In Day Tips for Parents of College Students - 08/07/2018

Dorm Move-In Day Tips for Parents of College Students

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Well, it's here. It seems like only yesterday that your son or daughter was just a little kid playing in the sandbox, but now they're young adults heading off to college this fall. Some of us moms and dads at Graff Mt. Pleasant know this experience all too well. College move-in day is certainly an emotional time, full of excitement as well as tears, but it doesn't need to be stressful.

Before you let your parental nerves get the better of you, read up on these helpful move-in day tips to help your child's transition to their dorm as smooth as possible!

Dorm Move-In Day Tips for Parents of College Students

    1. LET THEM LEAD

As much as you don't want to think about it, your child really isn't a child anymore. While we parents know that we only mean well, sometimes our sons or daughters interpret our care and concern as overbearing behavior. On move-in day, let them take the lead. Allow them to introduce themselves, take charge of unpacking, and handle any issues that might arise. Believe us, the feeling of seeing your kid display their independence and efficacy is way better than them screaming at you to get out because you're "smothering" them. Plus, you get to bask in the pride of having raised such an awesome human! Go you!

Dorm Move-In Day Tips for Parents of College Students

    2. EXCHANGE CONTACT INFO

If your student has a roommate, it's a good idea to exchange contact information with them just in case you ever have trouble reaching your son or daughter. If possible, it doesn't hurt to buddy up with the roommate's parents and get their numbers too. Strength in numbers!

Dorm Move-In Day Tips for Parents of College Students

    3. KEEP CALM

Move-in day is likely to be one when emotions run high. Your student is in a new place with new people, this is the first time they've ever been on their own, and now they have to LIVE at school. As a parent, it's important to help keep the energy positive during this time. Be calm and patient, don't give lectures or warnings, and (if you can help it) break down into tears AFTER you leave. Make this the big and exciting event it's meant to be!

    4. LIMIT YOUR ENTOURAGE

Several members of your extended family might want to come along to help and share in the excitement, but it's smarter to politely decline. Move-in day is absolute chaos. The rooms are often small as well as the hallways, and both are piled to the ceilings with boxes. That being said, it's best for cargo space and stress levels if you limit your moving party to just you, your student, and/or your spouse or a friend.

    5. BRING REFRESHMENTS

Chances are on move-in day, neither you nor your student is super familiar with what's around campus. On top of that, with how crowded and crazy it is, do you really want to venture out for anything? Instead, pack a cooler with snacks and drinks.

Heading off to college is a pretty emotional time, and move-in day is one of the most chaotic of the semester. Have no fear though, you've got this! From all of us at Graff Mt. Pleasant, we hope you've found this information useful, and wish all of the students in our community a safe and happy semester! Fire up Chips!

    7. "I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU" - THE REMBRANDTS, 1995

In addition to being the theme song of a show literally called Friends, this catchy, upbeat tune by the Rembrandts is the perfect embodiment of the very spirit of friendship.

Written in memoriam of his best friend and hip-hop icon, Notorious B.I.G., Sean Combs aka Puff Daddy samples The Police on this heartfelt track about the loss of someone close to you, and the bond that remains even after they're gone.

    9. "MY BEST FRIEND" - WEEZER, 2005

This punchy headbanger from rock quartet Weezer is an anthemic tribute to the power of friendship that conjures up memories of driving with the windows down and just rocking out with your pals.

    10. "THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND" - ANDREW GOLD, 1978

An All-Star MVP, the 2019 Camaro, and Chevrolet Inspire Kids Through Baseball - 07/24/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- The 2018 Ted Williams Most Valuable Player, Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros, was given his choice of either the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS or the trail-ready Colorado ZR2. He chose the redesigned Camaro during the All-Star Game MVP ceremony hosted by Chevrolet earlier this month at Nationals Park in Washington.

This year's All-Star Game was Bregman's first appearance as a participant, during which he hit the game-winning home run for the American league.

“Bregman set a great example for baseball fans and especially our kids by hustling hard for the entire game and demonstrating exceptional teamwork — essential qualities to win on the field, in the classroom, and in life — and that is why Chevrolet is proud to present the MVP award,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet.

Since 2005, Chevrolet has been the Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball and is also an Official Partner of Play Ball, a collective effort by the MLB to encourage young people to get involved in baseball and softball. Through the Chevrolet Youth Baseball program in partnership with dealerships across the country, Chevrolet has donated more than 150,000 equipment kits, raised more than $36 million, and offered more than 1,800 free skills clinics - all of which has positively impacted more than 7 million boys and girls across the United States.

“At Chevrolet, we appreciate the positive effect that playing sports has on our kids, and that is why it is so important for our brand and our dealers to support baseball at every level,” said Sweeney.

5 Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe in Hot Weather - 07/17/2018

5 Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe in Hot Weather

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Considering the super hot and dry conditions we've been experiencing lately, we at Graff Mt. Pleasant feel that it's a great time to remind you that you're not the only one who needs to stay cool! Like humans, dogs are very susceptible to the same risks as we are when it comes to hot weather. Although, they need a little more of your help to beat the heat. Here are five tips to keep your four-legged friend safe when the temperatures rise!

5 Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe in Hot Weather

    1. KEEP THEM HYDRATED

Water is just as important to our dogs' survival as it is to our own, as it's responsible for the proper function of every cell and organ in their bodies! If your dog spends a lot of time outside, make sure you put their water bowl out there with them and check it regularly. While on walks, bring a bottle of water along for them as well as for yourself, and stop for breaks!

    2. WATCH OUT FOR HEATSTROKE

Dogs with shorter noses (such as boxers, pugs, Shar-Peis, Boston terriers, Brussels griffins, mastiffs, chow-chows, bulldogs, Shih Tzus, Staffordshire terriers, Lhasa apsos, and spaniels) and senior dogs are especially susceptible to heatstroke. Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, fever, vomiting, and collapse. Remember: they can't tell you if something is wrong. Keep an eye on them while they're outside and when they come in, and get them to a vet as soon as possible if anything seems off!

    3. DON'T LEAVE THEM IN THE CAR

Every summer, many dogs die because they were left in their owners' hot car, but it is avoidable! A 75-degree day can feel like 150 to your friend in the fur coat, and the temperature inside a car can quickly rise an additional 20 degrees to that within the first 10 minutes - even with the windows rolled down. The number one way you can avoid losing your buddy is by using good judgment. If its way too hot outside, leave your dog at home in a cool place.

    4. HAVE MORE WAYS TO KEEP COOL

In order to help your pup beat the heat, offer them more ways to keep cool at home! Fill up a kiddie pool in the backyard for them to splash around in, leave a fan in a place where they can lay in front of it, or get them a treat like doggy ice cream from your local pet bakery!

    5. AVOID HOT SURFACES

When taking your dog for a walk or letting them outside, try to avoid hot surfaces like pavement whenever possible. You know how your feet burn off when you walk on a hot sidewalk? Well, you have the luxury of putting on shoes. Try to go for walks in the park where they can walk on grass, and lay out a rug along their path if your house's backdoor doesn't immediately open up to the yard.
